Mathematics Department

Objectives

The Mathematics Department aims to:

1. Foster the joy and love of learning Mathematics by creating engaging, meaningful and positive learning experiences.

2. Develop students’ mathematical concepts and skills to build a strong foundation for learning and application.

3. Develop students’ cognitive and metacognitive skills through mathematical approaches to problem-solving, enabling them to plan, monitor and reflect on their learning.

4. Develop students’ ability to think, communicate and reason logically and critically when engaging with mathematical ideas and solving problems.

5. Empower students to be leaders in facilitating Mathematics learning, encouraging them to take ownership of their learning and support their peers.

Department Programme Framework

To achieve these objectives, the Mathematics Department provides a range of programmes under two complementary pillars: MATH QUEST and THINK MATH. Together, these programmes provide students with opportunities to develop strong mathematical foundations while cultivating the thinking dispositions, confidence and independence needed to apply Mathematics meaningfully.

1. MATH QUEST

MATH QUEST is a comprehensive and inclusive programme that provides students with opportunities to strengthen their mathematical foundations, deepen conceptual understanding and develop confidence in applying mathematical skills in a supportive environment.

• Factual Fluency develops students’ ability to recall and apply mathematical facts quickly and accurately, providing a strong foundation for more complex mathematical learning and problem-solving.

• Heuristics SLS provides an interactive platform for students to explore and apply heuristics in solving challenging problems. Students are encouraged to experiment with different strategies, learn from one another and embrace mistakes as part of the learning process, fostering greater confidence and ownership of their learning.

• Figure It Out provides structured opportunities for students to revisit and practise previously learned concepts. Through targeted reinforcement, students consolidate their understanding, address learning gaps and work towards mastery and greater confidence in applying their mathematical skills.

2. THINK MATH

THINK MATH develops students as thoughtful and independent mathematical thinkers. Through interactive, collaborative and inquiry-based experiences, students are encouraged to articulate their thinking, explore different strategies and apply Mathematics to unfamiliar and real-world contexts.

• Math Buzz develops students’ ability to communicate mathematical thinking and reasoning clearly and effectively. Students are encouraged to question, justify their ideas, make connections and appreciate the relevance of Mathematics in everyday life.

• E2K provides opportunities for students to explore more complex mathematical concepts through an inquiry-based approach. Students deepen their conceptual understanding while developing mathematical reasoning, independence and confidence in tackling challenging mathematical tasks.

Through these programmes, the Department seeks to create a positive and supportive culture of Mathematics learning, where students are encouraged to persevere, learn from mistakes and take increasing ownership of their learning. Students are also given opportunities to explain their thinking, facilitate peer learning and support one another in their mathematical journey.
